Links ahoy!
I have nearly 1200 del.icio.us bookmarks. Shall I share?
I haven’t felt much like writing, so this might be a way for me to be more regular with this blog.
Free Iced Coffee @ Starbucks, every Wednesday until 7/23
So I heard via FatWallet that SBUX had a free iced coffee card. The roomie and I headed out last night, and talked the barista into giving us the cards a day early. I tried to use it today, but was told to return next week. So hie thee hither to a Starbucks near you, and see if you can get your hands on one of these cards!
upd: FatWallet adventures
A user on FatWallet Free Stuff forum keeps posting these religious item “freebies” which all require signing up with the same church. Some threads get deleted, some don’t. I got annoyed with this broad clogging up my RSS with the same thing almost every day, so I finally sent a note to the mod. The response? “I don’t see any link between the site and the user.” Um, what, you thought her church group would have the same name as her username on FatWallet? Does that mean I can post daily with some barely concealed agenda too?

Fit Flop Hooray

Well, it took a bit of searching both online (about a dozen unfinished FatWallet cashback transactions) and in-store (ended up touring metro Boston by T), and finally ended up getting my FitFlops at Macy*s in Burlington. If you haven’t heard, they’re supposedly a current fitness craze in the UK: a sandal that tones your legs and hindquarters as you walk around. They’re really comfy, and make my achin’ back feel nice, so that alone is worth the $40. And if the claims are more than just hype, well, I won’t be complainin.’ (Once you start usin’ folksy talk, you just ain’t gon’ stop.)
Got one of those friends?
I have a friendship (not a particularly close one, for reasons that will soon be obvious) fit for an old-school sitcom. This girl usually runs into incredible streaks of luck, but also can’t help bragging about it. It often comes across as patronizing. If Fred Rutherford was a naturally-size-0, designer-obsessed, 26-year-old bubbleheaded PhD student, it would be her.
She keeps winning Amazon gift cards on Blingo.com, a Publisher’s Clearing House rebadge of Google’s search engine. And now I really want to win from them, too. I just keep missing it though.
Sometimes things do change for the better…. Alibris revisited
So I’m in grad school. Have I written about that? Somehow it’s not as easy to talk about as undergrad, not as fully realized a purpose in my life. Perhaps I’ll write another post about it soon.
ANYway, I had to buy books for this semester. So after comparison shopping on www.addall.com and consulting the cashback prospects at www.fatwallet.com, I decided to shop www.alibris.com for the books. This would be my first time shopping Alibris in nearly five years, since a bad experience left me waiting all summer for an older book which arrived in not the greatest condition.
This time, though, I had shipping confirmations from each seller, quick turn times, and decent books. All in all, not unlike the results from half.com or Amazon, with shipping more comparable to the latter (second party sellers’ shipping, not that lovely free super saver shipping).
Donations for Tax Deductions–Hooray!
So my yard sale left me with far too many clothes items (both mine and other family members) from bygone years. After some research about the new tax laws, I decided to donate them all to Goodwill and take an itemized deduction. Why? Well, my used clothes have never sold terribly well on ebay, for one thing. The collective IQ there seems to have plummeted as well, so I spend my time fielding questions already answered in the listing, taking pointless complaints, and even (on one occasion) receiving negative feedback because the buyer didn’t understand the measurement units used in the listing! I chose Goodwill because 83% of donations go to the intended recipients, unlike many charities that pad their own pockets. Also, your donation to Goodwill helps in several ways: they employ individuals who would otherwise have trouble entering the workplace, plus the money raised from direct donations and from the sale of donated goods goes to help other people in need. Lastly, they are recognized by the IRS, so you don’t have to worry about your deduction being questioned later on, as long as you follow the rules.
I’m no tax advisor, but just so you know what I’m talking about, the rules are basically:
- This year, you need a receipt for all donations. In the past, you could claim up to $250 without a receipt.
- Many charitable organizations (including churches and non-profits) are recognized by the IRS, so that you can claim up to 50% of your income in donations to them. For the ones who don’t have this status with the IRS, you can claim 20% or 30%, depending.
- You cannot deduct donations to an individual. So you could give to your church, but not your minister, even if there was an occasion of special need.
- You can deduct certain expenses related to charitable giving. You’d best take a look-see here.
With Goodwill, you write up your receipt with what you think your donated items are worth, and then take it in to an attended donation center. If the attendant finds the items to be in “good, used condition” (his/her discretion, it seems), he or she will sign off on the receipt, and you’re merrily on your way. Today I spent all morning going through old clothes and writing up the “good condition ones.” It took all of 5 minutes to make the donation itself, and I walked away with a receipt for $300 to deduct on my taxes. Plus a clean closet. Yippee! I see they also take books, so I might have to make another trip this holiday season!
